Nancy Magoo’s Top Tracks of 2011

It’s that time of the year again, and this time I’m cutting it close. This year has been Uni, working at Softbelly, moving to London, having adventures in London and in 27 days I’ll be moving back to my beloved Melbourne. Loved this year and appreciative everything I’ve experienced, the people I’ve met and my already existing friendships. Here are some of the songs that made up the soundtrack to my life this year. HERE WE GO!

Arctic Monkeys – Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair: I saw them in 2007 and I still like them. That’s got to be saying something for someone that has such a short attention span. This song was in Fresh Meat, and if you haven’t seen the British comedy, I recommend you do so. The two don’t really have much to do with each other than that, but I don’t want to write another list of TV Shows of 2011.

Badbadnotgood – Mass Appeal / Transmission: This album was SOLID. Maybe one of my favourites of the year. Just three Canadians playing some jazz type hip hop fusion. You can download the entire album – here.

Beastie Boys – Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win / Make Some Noise: BEAST-IE BOYS! I’ve written too many articles already on them like this one and this one. Still fucking rad after so many years in the industry. TUNES!

The Black Keys – Lonely Boy: Who doesn’t love The Black Keys? You don’t? Well fuck off.

The Belligerents – Such A Crime: Friends of Destroy Whiteboy released this indie pop nugget of goodness this year. I mentioned that I liked the to my friend in Queensland and he seemed quite smug that I had broadened my horizons and admitted I liked a band that wasn’t from Melbourne. Lovely lads who did an interview with us – here. Can’t wait to hear what else these guys will do in the future.

Chase N. Ca$he – Can She Do It / I Don’t Want Nothing: Slow jamz and stripper anthems. WHAT WHAT! Check out the entire mixtape, Gumbeaux, it’s fucking amazing. So glad I went on a downloading spree when I found an article about mixtapes you should listen to. Wish I could find that article again but it had stuff like A$AP Rocky, Big K.R.I.T and Frankenstein.

Foster The People – Call It What You Want / Don’t Stop / Helena Beat / I Would Do Anything For You / Waste: Well basically the whole of the debut album, Torches I loved. Although I’m completely overplaying it at the moment. I hope they don’t become horrible dissapointing with their second release.

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know {Ft. Kimbra}: Well this is obviously going to get number one on Triple J’s Hottest 100 but for once I won’t actually be mad about it. Y’know what I mean, you sit there at a BBQ on Australia Day listening to the entire countdown and by the time number one hit you’re all drunk and sunburnt and fucking Silverchair wins. You proceed to cry and kick your friends from pure frustration. Maybe that’s just me. This song took a while to grow on me, but I finally got there. Kimbra’s voice doesn’t even annoy me like a lot of modern female singers.

Modeselektor feat. Thom Yorke – Shipwreck: This song is haunting and has a stellar video. I wrote about it here at Portable.tv and I’m too slack to write about it again, so check out the article if you want more information. Or just watch the video and make up your own mind. I love post-apocolyptic type scenes. If you do to, watch the sometimes bad but mostly great British show Survivors.

SBTRKT – Right Thing To Do {Ft. Jessie Ware}: Such a tune. Think I first heard it when I was listening to Shantan Ichibans show on Triple J over the Internerd. That dude is a champ by the way. Anyways, I love the kind of garagey feel and it has been a kind companion to me while I walk the streets of London, but not in a prostitute kind of way.

Strokes – Under Cover Of Darkness: Another fun tune that you can dance along to and I’m sure to hear get played at Ding Dong Lounge the next time I go. Oh Julian Casablancas and Fabrizio, BE MINE!

Title Fight – Shed: I saw these guys twice in London. They’re pretty damn good. Now listen to them already. As you can tell as the list goes on and I consume more beer, I have a lot less to say.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Garden: Such a tune. I’ve been playing this song non stop. It also has reignited my love for gaunt, pastey white English boys.

Tyler The Creator – Yonkers: Unoficial leader of OFWGKTA, Tyler The Creator made one of the best tracks of the year with Yonkers. Also check him out on Complex’s list of The 25 Most Stylish Celebrities of 2011. I’ll definitely miss all the men in London that dress like this. Also check him out doing some stuff with BBNG.

And that concludes my list. If you wanted to know what I chose last year, you can find it here, on whiteboydancefloor. May 2012 bring you lots of hapiness and fun.
